How to Change Icon Size in Windows? [4 Ways]

This article will show you how to resize the desktop, taskbar, and file explorer icons in Windows 11.

By default, Windows 11 desktop, taskbar, and File Explorer icons are moderately sized. However, you can customize the icon size, such as change the icon to small, large, extra large or any other size. When the icons on the desktop are too small, you can change the icons to large, or when there are too many icons on your desktop, you can change the icons to small.

Change Desktop Icons in Windows 11

As mentioned above, you can change the icon size to small, medium or large.

To quickly change the desktop icon size, right-click an empty area on the desktop and select the View option.

Choose a size from the context menu, or press the shortcut buttons below:

  • Large Icons: Ctrl+Shift+2
  • Medium Icon: Ctrl+Shift+3

Change Desktop Icon Spacing Using Registry Editor

Search for and open “Registry Editor” in Windows Search.

Copy and paste the path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics

into the address bar of Registry Editor and press Enter.

In the WindowMetrics folder of the registry, there are two registry keys:

  • IconSpacing
  • IconVerticalSpacing

Double-click the “IconSpacing” registry to change the horizontal spacing of the icons.

Enter a value between -480 and -2730 in the Value Data field and click OK.

Note: The value for normal size is “-1128”, the default for both registries, increasing the default will decrease the spacing, and decreasing it will increase the spacing.

Double-click the “IconVerticalSpacing” registry to change the vertical spacing of the icons.

Enter a value between -480 and -2730 in the Value Data field and click OK.

After restarting the computer, the vertical and horizontal spacing between Windows 11 desktop icons has changed.

Change file and folder icon size

File and folder icon sizes can also be customized through the Window 11 File Explorer. Follow the steps below to resize folder icons in Windows 11:

Open File Explorer and click the View button in the toolbar to choose the appropriate folder size: Extra Large, Large, Medium or Small icon options.

Once you have selected an icon size, the folder icons will automatically resize to the size you selected.

Icon size can also be changed according to four layouts: List, Details, Tile or Content.

Changing the size or layout of icons in a folder only changes the current folder.

After changing the folder icon size in a folder, click the ellipsis in the File Explorer ribbon and choose Options from the menu.

In the Folder Options dialog, switch to the View tab and click the Apply to Folder button.

Click the “Yes” button on the confirmation box.

After clicking OK to close the dialog, the icon size and layout of the current folder applies to all of its subfolders and files.

Change Windows 11 taskbar height and icon size

To change the Windows 11 taskbar height and icon size, you need to modify the Registry Editor to make the taskbar icons larger or smaller.

Press Win+R to open the Windows Registry Editor, enter “regedit”, and click OK.

Open the following input in Registry Editor: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

And then press Enter.

In the left navigation pane, right-click the Advanced folder and select New, click DWORD (32-bit) Value. Alternatively, right-click on any empty space in the right pane and select ‘New’ > ‘DWORD (32-bit) Value’.

Rename the newly created registry key to: TaskbarSi.

Double click on “TaskbarSi” and change its value data to one of the following:

  • 0 – small size
  • 1 – Medium (default)
  • 2 – larger size

Click OK to close Registry Editor and restart your computer. Then, your taskbar and its icon size will change based on the settings you just made.

Change the size of Windows 11 icons using display scaling

Display scaling allows you to change the size of text, icons, taskbars, windows, and other user interface elements by following these steps:

Right-click anywhere on an empty area of the desktop and select Display Settings.

Under the Display Settings page, scroll down to the Zoom and Layout section and click the drop-down menu next to the Zoom option.

The default scale is “100%”, you can change the icon size to: “100%”, “125%”, “150%” or “175%”.
