When you open a browser such as Google Chrome, the browser will ask you if you want to make it as your default browser. However, the steps to change the default browser in Windows 11 are more complicated in Windows 10. Therefore, in Windows 11, you may not receive the message asking you to change your default browser, and even if you do, you may be redirected to Apps > Default Apps to change the default browser.
Change Default Browser in Windows 11
If you don’t want Edge to be your default browser, you can change your favorite browser as your default browser. Next, we will tell you how to switch Google Chrome as the default browser.
1 Select Settings > Applications > Default Applications
2 Under Set defaults for applications, search for the browser name you want to select and then choose the relevant result.
3 You’ll see a list of browser-related files, with the currently associated application displayed under each filename. In Windows 11, you can’t simply change the default browser with a single click, you have to change the browser assigned for each specific file type.
4 Find the file types assigned to Edge, such as .HTM, .HTML, HTTP, HTTPS, and .PDF, and click on the ones you want to change.
5 You may get a before you switch popup urging you to try Microsoft Edge – go ahead and click Switch Anyway. You’ll see a pop-up with an option to Continue with this app and the other browsers you have installed below. Go ahead and choose the one you want to use. (Note that some file types may not provide an alternative for your browser.)
Note: Some browsers may already have a system that makes it easier for you to switch your default browser. For example, when we open Firefox for the first time, it asks if we want it to be the default. We choose continue, and when we went to the Default Applications section of the settings, we found that Firefox is now set as the default for .HTM, .HTML, .HTTP, and .HTTPS files. Edge is still listed as .PDF, .SHTML, .SVG, .XHT, and .XHTML files.
